Why in the world would you do that?
Why pray for Japan when you could be donating money to help the cause, or giving blood to save lives? Are you expecting God to command the waters back into the sea and to seal the cracks in the ground? Are you asking Him to mend the devastation with a snap of the fingers?
Why in the world are we praying?
Because praying is the best thing we can do. Because we recognize His command over the land and authority over the seas. By all means, we can give our money and donate our blood, but does He not own it all? For thousands of years, He has kept the waters from consuming the whole earth just as He promised. He has sustained us on this planet despite our abuse of the Earth. Above all, He has given us true love in the form of a Son to save us for what matters.
In a world where praying sounds ridiculous and pathetic, we’ll continue to pray. Because it is a powerful act that God has given to us, and it is powerful for the sole reason that we rely on His sovereignty.
Let’s continue to pray for Japan. Really pray, like we mean it, because we should.
I made a sticky note to remind myself. You should too, if your memory skips away as easily as mine.
